2-days wilderness tour with overnight in a Sami hut

Traditional sami hutThe tour begins 09.30 in the morning with car transfer from your hostel/hotel in Kiruna to the starting place 15 km north of the city. Here we will equip you with snow pants and winter shoes.
If you need to storage some of your luggage it is possible to do it here, in our storage room.

Together we drive 10 kilometers with snowmobile and sledges. The tour goes through the beautiful winter landscape and on the frozen Torne- and Rautas River. The area has a great wildlife and along the track we might see wild animals and for sure foot prints from them in the snow. In wintertime there are for example a lot of mooses and reindeers along the rivers.

Inside the sami hutIn December the river next to the camp is unfrozen and we paddle across with raft boats. The camp is 100 meters from the river.  We are now 10 km away from nearest road and this is the true "off the grid". Very simpel, limited electricity from mainly solar energy and far away from city lights, which is very good for spotting northern light, aurora borealis. The camp area borders to the Alajaure- and Rautas wildlife and nature preserves.
There are always warm cabins at the camp with hot tea or coffee where you can warm up after the snowmobile tour. The cabins where you live are well isolated, there are beds with sleeping bags and and pillows, and the relaxing sound from the fireplace.

After installing in your cabins we do some "easy survival"- preparing firewood to keep your cabin warm and for the sauna, and we also bring up fresh drinking water from the river. All with detailed instuctions from your guide to make it fun and safe. Torne River is one of the few remaining rivers unaffected by human activities and the water is perfectly clean.
If you like to try more "serious survival", it is possible to build a snow cave to sleep in.

In December and January when it is only 4 hours dayligt we start those activities at once after arrival to use the remaining light. Meanwhile your guide, Märta or Ivan, is preparing lunch in our warm cabin. Local food made out of reindeer- or moose meat or fish with bread will be served, and then a cup of coffee/tea with a cake. It is also possible to have vegetarian food- just tell us before.

After lunch you perhaps like to rest a while in your cabin and then try some of the activities.
For example ice fishing, cross country skiing, snowshoe hiking, ice skating, air rifle shooting, build a snow cave, taking photos of the beautiful surrounding etc.

Dinner will be inside a cosy barbecue hut and you can grill the food over the open fire. Meanwhile the sauna is under heating.
After the barbecue the sauna is ready to enjoy for the rest of the evening (the more brave people roll in the snow afterwards).

Hopefully there is now a sparkling northern light in the sky. In clear sky chances to see northern light (aurora borealis) are very high. The time when it appear is unpredictable so you have to look out from your cabin and check the sky from time to time. You can see the aurora just outside your door.
Your cabin is as mentioned heated with wood and you have to fill in wood in the stove with some logs from time to time. In the cabin you have tea and coffee that you can prepare on the stove.
There are sleeping bags to borrow, but if you prefer your own it is OK to bring it along or a travel sheet.
